Learn how to deal with the emergencies you’re most likely to face in halls, shared houses, nights out and everyday student life. We'll give you confidence to help a friend until professional help arrives.
What will we cover?
We've worked out everything you need to know to help yourself and others in the event of a disaster.
Common emergencies:
- Choking
- Severe bleeding
- Burns and scalds (kitchen accidents)
- Head injuries and concussion
- Fainting and seizures
Medical emergencies
- Asthma attack
- Anaphylaxis and EpiPen use
- Diabetic emergencies (low blood sugar)
- Stroke recognition (FAST)
- Heart attack awareness (rare but important)
Lifestyle emergencies
- Alcohol poisoning
- Drug overdose (including recognising opioid overdose)
- Drink spiking awareness
- Looking after an unconscious friend
- Knowing when not to let someone “sleep it off”
Living away from home
- What should be in a student first aid kit
- Minor cuts, sprains and strains
- Nosebleeds
- Temperature/fever
- Food poisoning and dehydration
Practical scenarios
- Flatmate collapses after drinking
- Friend choking at dinner
- Housemate has an asthma attack
- Someone has an allergic reaction after takeaway food
- Kitchen knife accident with heavy bleeding
- Finding someone unconscious in halls
